A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
